Whether you just got your first gang sheet or you've been pressing for years, nailing the application process is everything. A bad press can ruin a good design - and nobody wants that. Here's exactly how we do it at Fresh Prints DTF, straight from our shop in Boaz, Alabama.
What You'll Need
- A quality heat press (we can't stress this enough - household irons are a gamble)
- Your DTF transfer from Fresh Prints DTF
- A clean, pre-pressed garment
- A heavy cotton cover sheet (an old heavy cotton t-shirt works perfect)
Step-by-Step Application
Step 1: Pre-Heat Your Garment
Give your garment a quick 3-5 second press to remove moisture and wrinkles. This is the step most people skip, and it's the one that causes the most adhesion issues. Moisture is the enemy of a clean transfer.
Step 2: Position Your Transfer
Place your DTF transfer ink side down, film side up on the garment. Line it up where you want it. If you're doing a chest print, use a ruler or alignment tool. A little masking tape on the edges helps keep it from shifting during the press.
Step 3: First Press
Here's where the magic happens. Set your heat press based on your fabric:
- 100% Cotton: 300°F, 15 seconds, medium-firm pressure
- Cotton/Poly Blends: 285°F, 15 seconds, medium-firm pressure
- 100% Polyester: 270°F, 15 seconds, medium pressure
No cover sheet needed for the first press - the PET film protects the design.
Step 4: Hot Peel
This is the satisfying part. Immediately after pressing, peel the film while it's still hot. Do it in one smooth motion, rolling from corner to corner. Don't yank it straight up - that smooth roll is what gives you that clean, professional finish.
Step 5: Finish Press
Here's our secret weapon at Fresh Prints: cover the design with a heavy cotton material - we literally use an old heavy cotton t-shirt - and press again at the same temperature and time as the original application. This locks everything in for maximum durability and wash resistance.
Pro Tips From Our Press Room
- Even pressure = even adhesion. If your press has uneven spots, you'll see them in the transfer.
- Don't stretch the garment while it's hot. Let it cool completely before handling.
- Test your temps. Different garment brands run differently. Do a test press when you switch brands.
- Batch your shirts for efficiency - pre-heat a stack, then press through them assembly-line style.
That's it. Five steps to a perfect press every time. If you're still dialing in your process, don't hesitate to reach out - we're always happy to help a fellow presser get dialed in.
